Little Leaps Therapy Services

Frequently Asked Questions

Paediatric physical therapy at home Sydney

You have questions; we have decades of answers.

Navigating your child’s therapy journey can feel like a lot to take in.

We’ve gathered the most common questions we hear from parents to help you feel informed, confident, and ready for those first little leaps.

First thing’s first:

Which suburbs do you service?

We offer paediatric physiotherapy services across the Sydney Hills District and surrounding areas. Our team currently travels to families in Baulkham Hills, Bella Vista, Castle Hill, Kellyville and Winston Hills. We also cover Northmead, Epping, Pennant Hills, Macquarie Park, Beecroft and Cherrybrook. If you don't see your suburb listed or you're unsure if we cover your area, please don't hesitate to contact us. We'd love to see if we can serve you and your child, no matter where you're located in the Sydney Hills District and surrounds.

  • Paediatric physiotherapy is a specialised branch that focuses on promoting optimal physical development and functional abilities in children. It can help children with various conditions improve mobility, strength, balance, coordination, independence and confidence, enhancing their overall quality of life.

  • We see children of all ages, from newborns right up to those 'big kids' on the brink of adulthood (17, turning 18 years old). Our interventions are tailored to the specific developmental needs of each age group.

  • If you notice delays in your child's motor skills, difficulties with movement, or challenges in physical activities, paediatric physiotherapy might be beneficial. We encourage you to reach out to your GP, community nurse, or to our team if you have any concerns.

  • Our experienced therapists address a range of conditions, including developmental delay, cerebral palsy, torticollis and plagiocephaly, orthopaedic issues, connective tissue disorders, Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, hypermobility, brain injury, neurological disorders and rare genetic conditions. Please see our services page for more details or contact us to discuss your child's unique needs.

  • The duration and frequency of therapy sessions vary based on your child's individual needs. After our initial assessment, we can discuss our recommendation for session length and frequency. Some children benefit from weekly sessions, others fortnightly or monthly, and some have 'blocks of therapy' where they attend mulitple appointments in a week for a short period, usually focused on a particular goal.

  • Absolutely! We understand the importance of making therapy enjoyable. Our therapists use play-based activities and interactive techniques to keep your child engaged while working on their goals. We want your child to look forward to their physiotherapy sessions as much as we do!

  • We're adaptable to various home environments. Ideally, a clear space of about 2m x 2m in a lounge room is great, but we can be inventive if space is limited. Sometimes, we even like to use backyards for our sessions!

  • During the initial assessment, our therapist will evaluate your child's movement, strength, and overall physical development. We may also use a standardised assessment or other assessment tools, which we will discuss with you beforehand. This helps us understand their needs and design a personalised treatment plan. We'll also discuss your concerns and goals for your child's therapy.

  • No, you don't need a referral to book an appointment with us at Little Leaps. However, if you've seen a GP, medical specialist, or other allied health professional who recommended physiotherapy, sharing these details can be helpful. It allows us to collaborate effectively with your other healthcare providers to best support your child.

  • Yes, we have experience working with children with a wide range of abilities and medical conditions. Our therapists have all worked in tertiary Sydney hospitals and are also experienced in adapting treatments to suit each child's unique challenges.

  • Absolutely! We typically see the best results when parents or caregivers are actively involved in their child's therapy. We'll guide you on how to support your child's progress and incorporate exercises into daily routines. If we see your child in a community setting, such as a daycare, we like to keep you informed with an email after our session, summarising the activities and fun we’ve been having!

  • Yes! We love collaborating with other professionals supporting your child, including health professionals, teachers, carers, and support workers. This collaboration could involve phone chats, emails, sharing therapy goals and updates, or even joint sessions. We see it as a privilege to be part of your child's team!

  • Most of the time, yes we can. This depends on your child's school and their policies about on-site therapy sessions. We're happy to liaise with your school on your behalf. Ideally, we like to see a child at home for their first session before starting school sessions. For any sessions without you present, we'll send you an email summary to keep you informed.

  • Comfortable clothes and a full tummy are great starting points! You can explain to your child that we'll be looking at how their body moves and playing fun movement games. Showing them our picture from the website can also help. Most importantly, let them know that physiotherapy means having lots of fun and being safely challenged together!

  • Yes, we see children with both self-managed and plan-managed funds. However, your child doesn't need NDIS to access our services.

  • In many cases, yes. Most families can claim a rebate for paediatric physiotherapy, though the amount depends on your individual cover and circumstances. Here is how the two main options work:

    1. Private Health Insurance

If you have "Extras" cover, you are likely eligible for a rebate. Because every policy is different, we recommend contacting your insurer directly.

Ask your provider for the rebate amounts for Item 500 (Initial Assessment) and Item 505 (Subsequent Consultation) to get an exact figure of your out-of-pocket costs.

    2. Medicare (Chronic Disease Management Plan)

Your GP may be able to organise a Care Plan if your child has a chronic condition. Formerly known as an EPC referral, this Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plan provides a Medicare rebate for a limited number of allied health sessions per calendar year.

Eligibility is determined by your GP. As we are a specialist private service, there will be a "gap" payment between the Medicare rebate and our consultation fee.

  • Yes, we do charge a travel fee. This is calculated based on time and distance. For specific details about our travel fees, please contact us directly.
