Why Hydrotherapy (Aquatic Physiotherapy)?
Here at Little Leaps, we love spending time with your children in their everyday environments - whether that’s at home, in the community, or in the pool.
Both land-based physiotherapy and water-based physiotherapy (hydrotherapy) offer incredible benefits for children. Each environment challenges the body in different ways and can help children build strength, coordination and confidence.
And of course, therapy in the water comes with one extra bonus: it’s incredibly fun.
What is aquatic physiotherapy?
Aquatic physiotherapy, sometimes called hydrotherapy, is physiotherapy that takes place in a warm pool under the guidance of a trained therapist.
The properties of water - including buoyancy, resistance and warmth - create a unique environment that can support movement and make certain exercises easier or more achievable for children.
For many children, the pool provides a space where their bodies can move more freely.
Why the water can help children move differently
On land, our bodies are constantly working against gravity. This resistance is important because it helps build muscle strength and bone health.
However, for some children, gravity can also make certain movements difficult, tiring or uncomfortable.
In the water, the body becomes lighter because of buoyancy. This means children can practise movements with less impact on their joints and often with greater freedom.
At the same time, water provides gentle resistance in every direction, which helps strengthen muscles and improve coordination.
This combination makes aquatic physiotherapy an incredibly valuable tool in paediatric physiotherapy.
Benefits of hydrotherapy (aquatic physiotherapy) for children
Aquatic physiotherapy can support children in many different ways, including helping to:
build muscle strength and endurance
improve balance and coordination
increase joint movement and flexibility
practise movement skills in a supported environment
reduce stress on joints and muscles
promote relaxation and breathing control
Many children also feel more confident in the water, which can allow them to attempt movements that might feel challenging on land.
Why kids love physiotherapy in the pool
One of our favourite parts of hydrotherapy sessions is the energy, excitement and creativity that comes with being in the water.
The pool allows us to introduce games and activities that simply aren’t possible on land. We can challenge balance, movement and coordination in new ways while keeping therapy playful and engaging.
Our Little Leapers might be reaching, kicking, floating, balancing or splashing their way through activities - but behind the scenes, we’re carefully targeting specific movement goals.
And when tired bodies need a break, floating in the warm water provides a beautiful opportunity for muscles to relax while we focus on breathing and recovery.
Aquatic Physiotherapy at Little Leaps
Whether it’s the heat of summer or a crisp winter’s day, we love the opportunity to support children through indoor aquatic physiotherapy sessions in a warm pool environment.
At Little Leaps, we run aquatic physiotherapy sessions at the beautiful indoor facilities at Waves Aquatic and Fitness Centre.
This warm and welcoming space allows children to build strength, movement skills and confidence in a safe and supportive environment.
Supporting your child’s next little leap
Every child learns to move in their own way and at their own pace.
By combining land-based and water-based physiotherapy, we can give children the best possible opportunities to practise movement, build strength and experience success.
And when therapy feels like play, children are often willing to take their next little leap.
